How A Black Hole Really Works
(Thinking about the 58 house development behind us at MOSP.....)

A cosmic monster in our own Milky Way is giving scientists a brilliant show
The black hole at the center of our galaxy has been on a near-starvation diet for almos a million years—but now it's time for a snack.
Scientists in Garching, Germany, are closely watching a rare event some 26,000 light years away: a supermassive black hole in the act of devouring a huge gas cloud. It's providing the first-ever glimpse of how a black hole uses its massive gravitational power to pull in and consume interstellar materials—a little understood phenomenon.
"The cloud is being torn apart," said Stefan Gillessen of the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Garching, who first brought the event to the world's attention in 2011.
A black hole can form when a large star dies and its matter collapses into a much smaller volume. It's as if the mass of the Earth were squeezed into a ball the size of a marble. The resulting gravity is so intense that even light cannot escape.

Georgetown museum now displays large, historic propeller
Aug 15, 2013
GEORGETOWN (WBTW) - If you're in downtown Georgetown soon, you'll likely notice an outstanding addition to the streetscape: a large, rusted, barnacled, ship propeller.
The South Carolina Maritime Museum recently accepted a donation of the propeller, which came from the Norwegian steamship Leif Eriksson, which sank off the coast between Georgetown and Charleston in February, 1905.
According to the Georgetown Times, the Georgetown Propeller Club and Lowcountry Marine Salvage helped make the donation possible. The Eriksson wreck was not positively identified until 2007, and since then the preservation groups have worked to keep the propeller from going for scrap metal. (Read more from the Times here.)
According to excerpts from a New York Times article at the time, the Eriksson collided in poor weather conditions with a Standard Oil-owned steamship, City of Everett. Two men died, according to the paper, while 20 men were rescued.
For now, the propeller is propped up against the side of the museum's building on Front Street.

Educators, students dedicate new building for Early College High School
CONWAY — “Wow” was the word being heard around the new HCS Early College High School building Tuesday evening, as students, staff and guests gathered to dedicate the Trailblazers’ new home.
The 38,500-square-foot facility is the culmination of hopes and dreams that started more than six years ago with Horry County Schools’ Early College program, which became a full-fledged high school in 2012. The new building keeps Early College on Horry-Georgetown Technical College’s Conway campus, where its classes always have been held, but gives the school its own space in which to start its sophomore year Aug. 21.

GEORGETOWN S.C. — The future home of the Georgetown County Museum has been christened “The History Center.”
The building, at 120 Broad St. in Georgetown’s Historic District, will also be the home of the Georgetown County Historical Society and the Winyah Bay Heritage Festival.
Once the home of the county’s building and planning departments and the headquarters of the 911 dispatch service, the building began its transformation in the spring of 2012.

News from Coastal Waccamaw Stormwater Education Consortium (CWSEC)
Resources
In order to receive the most up-to-date
information on CWSEC, please visit our website at
www.cwsec-sc.org.
National Stormwater Calculator - Check It Out!
A new desktop tool from the EPA, the National Stormwater Calculator, estimates the amount of annual stormwater runoff from specific sites given site-specific parameters. The user chooses various types of low-impact development controls to alter estimates and obtain information that could help manage stormwater runoff. Useful to site developers, homeowners, or landscapers, this tool and more information can be found at:
http://www.epa.gov/nrmrl/wswrd/wq/models/swc/
(I'm told the following website is an excellent resource to educate homeowners about stormwater ponds.)
New On Clemson Extension's Website
In the month of August, new features on Clemson Extension's Stormwater Pond Management website (http://www.clemson.edu/extension/natural_resources/water/ stormwater_ponds/index.html) will be added, including a bi-annual pond inspection and maintenance checklist. A media release will accompany these website updates and reorganization.
New Postcard Ready for Distribution
A new educational postcard, Shorescaping Freshwater Shorelines, is now back from the printer and available for distribution. Please let Katie know if you are interested in distributing these.
Commercial Campaign
A robust campaign of the "We All Live Downstream" commercial has been purchased for the end of July through the end of September, including airtime during the Barclay Golf Tournament (August 20-25) and the BMW Tour (September 12-15). By October, there will be a new commercial available, and more on this is forthcoming.

Word Problem

Algebra word problems in high school? You remember: If a car leaves Los Angeles going sixty-two miles per hour headed east, and a bread truck leaves St. Louis going 72 mph headed west, calculate the number of miles the truck will have traveled west when it meets the car coming east, name the state in which they will meet, then using a mileage figure of 27 mpg for the the car and 11 mpg for the truck, subtract the number of gas stops for the car from the number of gas stops for the truck, multiply by your age and divide by seven (divide by eight if this is a leap year.) State your answer using scientific notation.
That's what came to mind as I studied one of latest proposals we received in the mail this week for changing our Covenant Rules. Specifically, Article VI regarding how close to the road a fence can be erected. The sentence that mesmerized me was, "No fence ... within 10 feet of the outside front corner of the dwelling which is the furthest from the road." I kept rolling that over in my mind ... inside corner, outside corner, front corner, opposed to a back corner? Finally, I had to sit down and draw it on a sheet of paper.
So, if you're confused, you might take a look at the following. I checked it out with someone on the Rules and Regulations committee who said it was an accurate depiction of what the committee intended. They did a good job, I think, considering all the opinions they had to weigh. I think it's kinda neat that we have neighbors willing to spend time working out these thorny problems. Their names are in the proposal letter. Tell them Thank You when you see them in the neighborhood.

Businesses have mixed feelings about reality show coming to Murrells Inlet
Posted: 08.02.2013
On Friday, crews worked hard to prepare for the newest reality show to hit the Grand Strand, which for the time being, has been called "Party Down South."
Filming will start Monday for the new reality show that will air on CMT about a group of friends spending their summer at the beach.
As crews continue to prepare for the first day of filming, they've been working with the local business community.
Many Murrells Inlet businesses told WPDE NewsChannel15 they have been visited by show recruiters, who have come to them with contracts that would allow them into their businesses and film.

The Unsecret Garden
With no secrets to conceal
A garden will reveal
Each facet of its glory
Every color being seen
Among the requisite green
Describes a detail of the story
Having nothing to hide
As her mood coincides
With the rites of the season
Respectful of the way
Her colors fade to gray
Not questioning the reasons
What seems to be conclusions
Is just shedding past illusions
Of scenes she left untold
The palettes of her history
Reflect no shades of mystery
So to not entrench her soul
No decisions must she make
To be real or to be fake
Cannot hide from her true color
While accepting without doubt
The new life that will sprout
The plan of nature's mother
To embrace the coming sequel
Which may or may not equal
The heritage of its past
With faith but not with envy
Her calm awaits the frenzy
When the time is right at last
Giving no excuses
Nor blaming past abuses
When her lushness is no longer
Assuring to return
With new lessons she will learn
To make her message stronger
She paints another chapter
While telling of its rapture
Makes no secret of its glory
This garden tells a story.
